Ken Kessler conducted a shootout in 2004 between the AVI Positron, Blue Note A-3, Harbeth HL-3PES-2, Pen Audio Rebel and the Spendor S3/5S. The Blue Note topped the shootout with the Spendor being judged as the "most LS3/5A-like…but it still wasn’t an LS3/5A". In summary, Ken rounded up the shootout with the following: Most importantly two things emerged from the listening sessions. The first thing is that all the loudspeakers in the group were certainly worth considering – no pups in the litter – and it spoke volumes for what is available today’s shopper in the small-monitor-for-under-a-grand sector. But the second realisation to emerge was that the Rogers LS3/5A is still so vastly superior to the current crop in every area bar maximum output levels that I’m afraid it’s business as usual:back to eBay, fellas. "the LS3/5A is still so vastly superior to the current crop ...." is quite outrageous but that's the fun part about audio. Hearing is not believing all the time, it's psych too.
When you hear REG of TAS d**n the LS (and he's a spendor and harbeth guy), it makes KK look like an audio oddball. Well, the LS3/5A is for everyone, but it doesn't try to be!
