Just read from the ls group that Rogers is back producing the LS3/5A according to Hi Fi News, May issue.
Wow! Whatta blessing! And the first batch accordingly got sold out immediately. I'm eager to see a review, and also if any of you have the May issue but it's only March 2008. Is this some hoax?

Hi Fi News is going to get to the States in a few weeks' time. Dan, don't forget to buy a copy.
Kenneth Kessler must have authored the press release or some review about the Rogers "empire strikes back" story about the re introduction of the LS3/5A.
Some LS group people are very curious about the drivers. And how of course these compare with the old venerable LS from Rogers and for that matter all LSs.
I have an idea. Look back at my Rogers Studio 3 which sounds like an LS too minus the bass hump and the little less airy treble, and it could well be it? Intriguing to say the very least, specially to those people who wants a "virgin" LS3/5A to mate with their ears, ha ha!

"Hi Fi News is going to get to the States in a few weeks' time. Dan, don't forget to buy a copy." Thank you James, I hope they do start here in the States as the subscription price now is $101.24 a year. I pay $13.00 a year for Stereophile....Dan

If you can go to the LS group now, there's a new post by Timothy describing the new LS3/5A? Another licensee I think. The ML3?
It seems exactly the LS, save for the 5.5 ohms impedance. Sports a tygan. Same cabinet. BBC License. Soft dome tweeter ( I like that!) that's the same as the Rogers Studio 3 I believe. For heaven's sake, while Kef and all the rest "China." This one reads: "Made in England."
As close as can be? In disguise one might say! But who cares. What matters now is the sound. Same or better? I wish it's the same. How about you?

There's a lot of discussion going on about the impending re-introduction of the Rogers LS3/5A by Andy Whittle and John Bell in the LS forum. John Bell gave quite a glimpse into the whole story about the resurrection of the "cat coffin" occupant -- Rogers.

This is really interesting news! James texted me about it when I was in Boracay and it got me excited. Can't wait for the listening impressions. OT: here are some of my Boracay pics. The resort in photos 73-94 supposedly belongs to the "pambansang kamao" - Manny "Pacman" Pacccquaioooo. ggorbetaphotography.cjb.net/ Note: click the "skip this ad" button on the upper right

Splendid shots Grant! I'm not even half way thru your slide show and I can "see" the light thru the shots.
Less is MORE in phtography and I think you have taken that into your minimalist compositions.
I really like what I saw. When I was there many years back, the weather was not so good and the waters filled with weeds since it was around December time -- habagat wind, so not much shooting save for scenics and family.
Apo Island off Dumaguete would be a nice place to stay overnight specially if one wants to shoot "pregnant dog" models. Ha ha sorry can't help it, it's been a looooong while talaga. Ask Oscar what he did in Mountain View one lazy Saturday? With his Leica R3mot and Nikon dslr!

The sea weeds were a disappointment for the boys in some of the beaches but looking at the bright side, they added more color to the shots. hehe.
I was in Naga last month and took some photos of the Cathedral and the Peñafrancia church. I feel bad coz it was overcast.
Next photo stop Batanes.
Back to the topic. I'll try to drop by Fully Booked later and hope to catch that HFN issue. I understand they only fly in 2 copies/month.

Harley and Carlito, et al were just over Basco, Batanes. They say it's like New Zealand minus the cold weather I think! Photos galore at www.flickr.com under Carlito So photography. Camera used was a Nikon 300D. Arizona Highways mag leaked out that Canon is coming out with a 31MP Canon 4D to replace its 5D. THe 31MP is for large prints. Shooters of this new camera can work in half the MP meaning 15.5MP for mundane shots. I'd love to have this camera for resolution to beat my M3 with a 5cm f 2 summicron! So, you're pretty enjoying your time being a local tourist! I envy that! THe lighthouse in Basco would be nice in Black & White, more so in Infra Red with big cloud formations in an otherwise pitch black sky using those red filter 25s plus polarizer. Those days are forever gone with no Konica 750 available anymore, and Kodak Hi Speed 1200 that you can only get from the States. Let me know bai the outcome and the photos paleeze. Crazy me. OT na ito for a Rogers thread!

The real question now about this Rogers 60th anniversary LS3/5A is: Will it sound like the old ones? What if it doesn't? What if it's better? I could hardly wait. Jo KI wants to compare the new Rogers to the Stirlings V2 'coz both don't use the same old drivers from Kef. Once the new Rogers arrive in Malaysia and five (5) are, they'll set the shoot-out accordingly. I hope Jo gets to hear these new Rogers first since he's one with a good sound perception and memory of them LSs.
I bet these new Rogers will sound more like the Rogers Studio 3 with probably some improvement in the treble range. If it will be a little more airy without being toppy, then it could well be the better new LS after all. I think this is what all of us are waiting for with baited breath?!
If these 60th year edition Rogers can better the oldies, and none so far has, think of how many LSs might get orphaned after all these years of collecting them. Think what would be of guys like Jo Ki and John Keung, even Ken Kessler who has several, and many others who collect these ancient boxes, should these Rogers beat them hands down?
Here's Ken Kessler's logic: "If it looks/walks/sounds/smells like a duck, then it is a duck. And this speaker (Rogers LS3/5a) is an LS3/5a."
Hmm..., let's listen!

I can't wait for all the feedback as well. I wonder how much break in time this would take?

According to Jo Ki, 5 pairs of the 60th are coming to Woo Kee Hong, and they'll loan a pair for a shoot-out hopefully comparing the Stirling V2 owned by Jo's friend, and the 60th. He might throw in his RA too to compare it (stock) with the new drivers.
Interesting that KK calls those old drivers "pesky" after all these years. My Rogers Studio 3 have a european tweeter, fabric dome type, and a bass driver that ain't Kef. These were made by Andy Whittle too, and they always kinda remind me of the Rogers LS sound of Oscar. Good midrange without the "hump" and "airiness" to the treble for the Studio 3. Call it "modern" if you like and that's it! As was compared to the Harbeth P3, the Rogers had a more forward balance. Slightly greater extension and sharper in tone than the P3 on the "horns" but slightly drier as reported. The P3 had more base over the Studio 3, making the cello sound fruitier and deeper in tone. Found these to be all true since I heard the P3 in HK and also at Ferdy's not too long ago.
Not the LS sound all the way for sure so not an LS still in the strictest sense. Meaning, no "bass hump" and all that "airiness" in the treble that only those kef drivers can do.
But it sure raises the question, is this enough? We've all lived too long on these drivers. Will the 60th improve on it? If those old pesky drivers proved to be troublesome in KK's notes, will the new ones of the 60th be better? Sound better?
Wow, if so, I'd be in hell wriggling out to be liberated!

Here are some scans from our friends in HK HFN closes with: "They have not only succeeded in cloning the LS3/5A, they've made it go slightly louder and deeper. I can say but one thing: I've placed an order for a pair without hesitation."

With bass "hump" there, it should really clone or better the LS sound a lot. Let's see what the treble can do to duplicate the "air" of the LS?
