Wow! Don't know where to start. Holy smoke! You've pulled another surprise at me, Moz. Where in heaven's name did you get those pictures? My memory is a little fogged that I took those. Now I know age does matter sometimes. As they say, wisdom comes with age, but at the expense of some memory loss too.
A little explaining is in order. Bought these pair from HK in 2001. Because of my idiotic fancy for these speakers, I handcarried them all the way inside the plane on our way home. Me wife and friend were just so amused looking at me craddling these babies. In truth, I was unsure what to make of these speakers since all that I've "heard" about them was from just reading much to much about them. Besides, back in the comfort of my home was a pair of spendor S3/5s. That these old pair would be any better was something I have yet to "hear." And to make the long of it brief, I was not disappointed. I've written Derek H. of spendor about these speakers and he wrote back telling me that these were made in Novemeber 1997, and the "cardas wiring" was meant to give it some noticeable improvement on details.
The vintage integrated in the background is a Bogen DB 230 I bought from ebay. As you may have heard, Bogen was a subsidiary of an airplane contractor for the U.S. military just as Stromberg Carlson was an affiliate or division General Dynamics Company.
This amp uses two pairs (one pair per side) of 6AV5 power tubes that are fatter than the 7868 or 7591 novar tubes which came out lately and extensively used by most amplifier makers in the U.S. during the final days of the golden era of tubes amplifiers.
This Bogen is right now trained to a JPW P1 speakers in my living room. Bogen sound is smooth (cognac type), yet not in every whit lacking in sparkle! It can be convincingly subtle and extremely sweet on the ears from my JPW P1 speakers. Has 30 watts of tube power on each side to shake a large room specially on large symphony works.
The third picture shows in part an OB (open baffle) using an Altec 403A (alnico) 8 inch full range woofer of vintage flavor still. Talk about Ella F, Marty Robbins, and those Frank Sinatra old recordings, and you'll get a kick from these Altecs!
Thank you Moz for showing these pictures.

James, Thanks for sharing your trip down memory lane. I remember those Spendors of yours as one of the first LS3/5As I heard. I was really mesmerized when I heard them in your house especially with the enchanting mids and hall ambiance.
I still remember that strumming bass accompaniment to Ella Fitzgerald. Slightly back center-left, rhythmic and defined tho not intrusive to her vocals.

Thanks for the nice words on the spendor LS.
I have several other speakers that I listen to more often, and everytime I switch to the LS, it just somehow makes me smile incessantly like a small kid. The "magic" never went away on these speakers. I hope I can keep them good forever enough to pass on their beauty to whomsoever's ears they charm.
We believe there are other speakers out there that can outclass the LS in sound levels, and dynamics, but I have yet to find a speaker that can be as expressive to the subtleties of music itself.
The designers were really smart to include musicians in their test of the sound of these speakers since the BBC had a whole symphony and smaller groups to help them fine tune these speakers. No wonder they sound musical and "natural" on the ears.

Moz first introduced the LS to me but I never heard any until I first heard it (and most memorable) in James' old house (set-up right between the dining table and sala), the music was like WWOOOOWWWW!!! ... that got me hooked into LS and vintage since then. Thanks bai!

Hey you know what? If I decide on cremation, I'd probably instruct my next of kin to put the ashes in these "cat coffins." There'll be two! Guys the admin will surely chastise us for this, but someone said: "humor is the most significant activity of the human brain." That said, let go back to something more useable like coffee?
