This has always been at the back of my mind. Which amp would really be the most suitable for the lS3/5A? When you have someone swear (and there are many) by his Quad IIs and a Radford ST trouncing it in some ways (el34 again), that seems reminiscent of the Dynaco ST70 as being the "best" standard commonly recommended pair.
Jo KI for one is not afraid to break the "sound barrier" of his LS by experimenting on a new amp called the Diva Blue Sky. He thinks this amp can beat his Quad IIs, Marantz 8B, and the best of his vintage amp, the Radford ST35 (this uses el34s).
The improvement he mentions is in the area of treble extension. I've been following his listening test and report on this amp, and thus far, he thinks it's a very capable amp on the LS3/5A.
Any have seen and heard a Blue Sky?
The ampex vintage amp I mentioned in another thread seems to have an extension that is not "typical" of vintage sound. But I don't know if the amp would equal the Blue Sky in that respect.
Anyhow, what I really am driving at here is this: the what's-in-the-back of my mind thing that sometimes bothers me (in other words I'm not immune from) is the thought that there's still some amp out there that can make the LS even sound "better" than what is now presently attained. If there is, what might that be?
If we ask Jo Ki, it could well be the modern Diva BS (it means Blue Sky not otherwise). I think this is on good authority because Jo has not left anything unturned. He has done acoustics, tweaking, energy transfer, symphatetic density on stands, and has a great number of great vintage stuff to hear "all" that we can only dream of maybe. Name it. He's got it type of thing in amps for the LS. Whatever happened to the Dynaco ST70? That was reportedly the best amp for the LS! In the U.S. shoot-out moons ago, it was a heavily modified ST70 that won the best amp. This was remember intended to be a shoot-out for the different brands of LSs, but turned out an amp thing instead.
So the search is still on. After 35 years or so of the LS3/5A, many of us still wonder "which" amp? While I think this is a testament to the "no-built-in-obsolescence" of the LS, I can't help but think of the dangers as well of quite making this a never ending path to timbuktu. So what's in store?
If it were not so intriguing how else would you "wish" your LS3/5A to sound?
