I had some good things going for the LS3/5A on sss amps with a LUxman 1981 receiver, and a MCormack power amp using a tube preamp. But there's no denying the close to perfect sound match are still with tube amps. Even the least famous of tube amps can vie for some decent sound.

A Naim Nait V is a darn good little integrated SS amp with the LS3/5A, however tubes seem better to my ears. 6V6/EL84 nearfield and KT77 or KT88 normal listening.

Tube amp!!! I still have to hear an SS that will make the LS sing better than a tube.

I always drived them with ss. The good ss will provide a very accurate amplified signal without adding other harmonics, so avoiding any colouration of the signal. But I respect totally those who prefer tubes.
It happens that the ls3/5a is not difficult to awplify with a ss amp, if there is power: its high and relatively constant impedance avoid many problems.
I currently drive them with integrated Rega Elicit (I own 2), which is the best amp ever made by Rega, and really unexpensive (hard to find now). All the members of the french forum that have bought one following my advise are very pleased with this amp now. Very very accurate for a small price. But it is hard to find, it seems that the owners keep it.

That looks like it would be at home in a BBC booth like this:

Ya. One who wants to be more authentic and original, buy 'em. A piece of BBC equipment, not bad. A piece for "bragging rights" and conversation too.

I've found some info on this amp. HH stands for Harrison Hill, the surnames of the founders of the company. It's a British company.
Marc Bolan -English singer songwriter- used then extensively in the studio. Pink Floyd also used them.
In the last half a decade of so they have been rediscovered as the best SS amp at least in the UK. They are ultra reliable and were the mainstay of British "pub" rock for years. they also produced a lot of high grade studio amps that were much favoured by the BBC to power monitors.
The BBC have a thomas speaker cab powered by a HH amp in every radio studio still as nothing better has been developed.
HH acoustics and HH electronics are an old english company who were very well respected for quality transistor designs, they started work on a music computer in the eighties which would have been like a pc with cubase before anyone else had thought of it, unfortunatly they went bankrupt because of it.

I was egging oscar to bid on it. If it does not go to far, I will try my luck but only if the seller accepts money transfer thru western union. Madali yon but also risky to pay someone you don't know from adam. But this guy has a lot of good feedback and sells some expensive stuff.
It does not matter to me if I win it or not. But I think one of us from this forum should "snap it!"
At least the guy who wins it can put up a radio station ala BBC style in his home to show how these LS monitors are set up using all BBC equipment. Grant if we can only make a big wall poster of some BBC studio that's well laid out and presentable, that should be some interesting piece for showing and conversation. I know who can do it for me here in Cebu, Jimmy Wu.
