"...there’s just something inherently right about the sound of a good pair of LS3/5As..." -- Chris Martens, Jan 2007Prices of LS3/5A's on ebay are at moderate to outrageously high levels as collectors and LS lovers snap them up. This is a testament to its legendary heritage and timelss design. If you can't bag yourself one as LS users don't wanna part with them or if you find yourself always outbid, then why not build one? Although this is just my second posting here, I'm not new to the LS 3/5A scene. In fact I bought my first pair Rogers 15 ohms back in 1978. As so many others I foolishly sold mine off som years later. Fuelled then by to much magazine reading and too little trust in my own judgement. Two years ago I finally bought a finished pair of Falcon Acoustics LS 3/5A 15 ohms. Although many decades had gone by, I had from the off a nagging feeling the sound balance of my new Falcons had been altered compared to what I remembered my Rogers sounded like. I gave my Falcons the benefit of doubt, thinking it might be due to a lack of hours on their clocks. Just recently, some 4 months ago, I fell upon a matched set of drivers for the LS 3/5A. Snapped them up and looked for all the rest of what goes into building a pair as faithfully as possible to the real deal. As it were late fall - which prohibited me from woodworking outside I went for a finished pair of Moldovian boxes in ebony veneer. Partly as a quick fix solution - and also because of their very low cost. After much correspondence on email I persuaded the Moldovan guy to make me a pair of boxes with BEECH fillets. (He normally uses some other kind of hardwood.) Sealings, fittings, felt surrounds etc, T27 mesh screens, and damping foam were all bought from Falcon Acoustics, while the Tygan fronts came from Stirling Broadcast (the best, closest replica) and the crossovers from the Taiwanese gentleman who sell some very nice and close Spendor 15ohm replicas on eBay. I won't go into the building process other than to state what went into my little LS 3/5A DIY project. A note about the crossovers: I originally received the Falcon 23aB 15 ohm single wire crossovers with my other Falcon stuff. But their size and shape (and sound) made me look for the better more "original" transformer mounted x-overs. Enter eBay and the Taiwanese xovers. Come warmer weather I'll have a go at some 9mm. birch ply cabs w.beech fillets. Till then, all I can say; go for it. But don't scimp on drivers and all the rest. It'll still be a lot cheaper than buying an old used out of spec unknown pair on the Bay. And the sound? If it weren't for my experiments with stacked LS 3/5A's my Falcon Acoustics 15 ohms would already be up for auction! My DIY pair sounds simply fantastic - even better than i remember my 1978 Rogers playing the same ol' lp records. The newer version exhibit increasing hardness in sound bordering on glare, white incrreasing loudness. A phenomenon absent on my DIY's as well the old originals. Falcon Acoustic LS 3/5A "the closest approach to the originals ever devised"? How about this: My suspicions on the Falcons altered sound balance toward a more bright and "modern" sound style, compared to the old originals AND the Taiwanese crossovers, was evidenced by a smaller size attenuation resistor (almost half the resistance of old) default on the Falcon aB crossovers for the T27 - and as it is deemed "default" I have every reason to believe it's implemented in the factory versions as well. Sure sounds like it. Yet another lenghty piece, for which I excuse. Hard to keep it short and simple if not to leave too much info out.

I ought perhaps tell what version KEF drivers I'm discussing above. The drivers for my DIY LS 3/5A's are the following: B110 SP 1003 T27 SP 1032 Cheers Rappaport
