I have been quite busy and have not logged in for some time. Add the fact that my laptop's hard disc crashed recently taking all my data along with it. It took me a while to reconstruct my web bookmarks and passwords! Dang! Anyway, Dan (mossback) and Richard (rcwy) paid us a visit yesterday and we took them to 3 houses for some listening and dining sessions. Here are some pics: At Mike's (MVA's) pad: Mike, Dan & Richard with his Black 12 Grant, Dan & Richard (at the back is Mickey checking out the EMT while Mike takes a photo of the Black 12) Dan gets animated w/ audio talk Mike's sweet spot. Rod, Sayang. Francis texted me just a day before and I thought he had rounded up the usual guys. The Cebu boys I think did a more extensive session with the Black 12. We found it to have a sweet and smooth presentation with good resolution and HF extension. It did very well with the ESL57's and Sp-1. Richard said it only had 50hrs break in so I'm sure it can only get better. I wonder if Oscar bought the unit?

My Dearest friends in Manila and Cebu, I am back to Hong Kong now. Words really cannot express how grateful I am and how much joy I had during the short stays with you, very nice people as my friends in Manila and Cebu! My deeply heart-felt THANKS for every one, particularly Oscar, Francis, Mike and Maddy for their hospitality, very delicious foods - Filipino and Western - and beautiful music! My sincere gratitude for Dan and Oscar for helping me organize the trip to Manila, and for Francis for arranging the visits to Mike and Maddy in Manila. Together with Oscar and Francis, these are the very nice hosts I have met so far. I am thinking to update my Audio Blog with some of the photos that I took in the Philippines. Just a bit busy right now but I shall let you know once I've done that. Meanwhile, may I wish every one very good health and all the best success in your whatever endeavors! Happy ears! Regarding sounding of the Black 12, it is best left to listeners. But I always have three questions when a gear is assessed at a host's place: First, matching with unknown gears of the host, second, listening environment unusual, and third, limited time. Fortunately, the visits to at Francis, Mike and Maddy's respective places, these questions did not trouble me at all, except a fuse blew due to one rectifier tube became defective, suddenly. The pair Black 12 is now with Oscar Suarez in Cebu, and breaks in gradually (less than 50 hours of singing, before) while Oscar is playing and getting the best out of the amps, with Mullard EL37 (GEC KT66 in the future?). I would be grateful for Oscar to give some feedback when he has time. This morning in Hong Kong, it is sunny and around 18 degree C in temperature and is a bit cool and cheerful. Hope this condition will remain in March, at least, to welcome Dan and Oscar to visit Hong Kong soon. Best regards, Richard Yim, Hong Kong www.gnostic-tech.com/index.html

Hi Rodney,
I've been with them (Dan, Ferdy, and Oscar) in all the sessions almost.
We've wrestled enough with these amps, and Oscar will be able to fill us in more appropriately.
These Black 'pearl" 12 amps are nicely made, lovingly made I think under the expert care of Richard. The 12 watt rating should not dissuade anyone because the amp sounds robust, and well extended in both extremes. "Moonriver" piano from Jacintha's had more body, good tone, and extension. The Ray Brown/Laurindo Almeida "Moonlight Serenade" CD of the same title really plumbed the depths of the bass notes giving the LS a remarkable low end that sounded "lower" than its 50hz. limit in comparison to other vintage amps we listen to mostly.
There's that holographic space as usual. But there's improvement to it because of the well extended freq. response of the amp itself.
A diamond in the rough!
