I was simply dumbfounded when an ageing artist former DC3 pilot friend named Joe Picornell just mentioned to me the name of the singer Carmen Miranda. He had a stash of tubes waiting for me to see when he casually mentioned this lady singer of the Benny Goodman era on 78rpm that he played on an old Garrard. Imagine a guy who listens to 78 rpms, and tells me how enjoyable the music was? Can you beat that?
So I went to youtube to check who this lady was. Whatta singer to pair off with Goodman. Exotic blend indeed.
Also watch the great Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. Does anybody have a cd of these two great drummers? Can it be loaned for copies?

During my visits away from home I listen to streaming audio off KPLU Tacoma Washington. Jazz during the week Blues weekend nights. Often the music you will hear is of LP’s! Local man Ken Wiley has a nationally broadcast show Sunday afternoon that features Jazz and big band music from the 1920’s through today. Some of the concerts of the 40’s and 50’s he Ken broadcast he attended or even played in himself. I highly recommend his show if you have a fairly good Internet connection. Globe Lines broadband worked for me in Philippines.
The Art Of Jazz Sunday’s 3:00pm – 6:00pm Ken Wiley, host of The Art Of Jazz, has one of the most extensive private jazz record collections in the world. On Sunday afternoons from 3-6, Ken dips into his vast library of original 78rpm and LP recordings and provides us with the unique opportunity to hear a broad spectrum of jazz, from the classic to the obscure, played from the original source material. A retired educator, Ken is also a scholar (primarily of Ellingtonia), a poet and a musician. Every Sunday he brings all these sensibilities to bear as he presents one of the most unique shows on public radio, The Art Of Jazz.

Wow! Glad to know you're home Dan. Every now and then it's nice to turn to radio. What's nice about it is the "unexpected." That old tune you don't have a copy on CD much less on LP. How I wish radio if there were such a good station around here that plays Dan's favorite repertoire! Indeed like photography, Jazz is the musician's art.
