Here's the rub. Most of us are quite familiar with old vintage stuff from Fisher, Scott, Bogen, McIntosh, Marantz, Eico, Knight, Pilot, Sherwood, Dynaco, HeathKit, and other less known brands like Voice of Music, and a few more. But when it comes to the Ampex name, we know that the name has always been associated with professional recording studios and tape recorders. So does that necessarily make ampex a good name in home amps? Well, if not obviously like other household audio names, they did so quite remarkably in the same league as their industrial audio products. Because Ampex have been lately getting some attention if not praises from some quarters among audiophiles in ebay, I've managed to successfully egg Dan Hayes to buy an ampex console that he sent all the way to Cebu for a listen. Let's just call the amp a "6973" for the lack of any info on the amp itself. The ampex name is not even found anywhere in its chasis which raises some suspicion that Ampex must have contracted another to do it for them since the amps are concealed in consoles under the Ampex brand. I'm only guessing here. The "6973" is of course the tube used here in this stereo power amp that comes with a volume or gain pot so one neatly can do away with a preamp. Good feature I think since one will not think or be bothered needlessly with a preamp that's necessarily Ampex as well. All that one would need is a CD player, and you're on to your favorite music with this amp. Now what do I hear aside from those unbelieavable praises from ampex users? Quite frankly, it's a whole wall of sound that's beautifully laid out in pristine clarity and body. Well, these guys who talk how good they are (ampex) are were quite right after all. This is another "must own" vintage stuff from the only industrial supplier of recording equipment in North America, the equal equivalent of ReVox of Europe. If I know what you're thinking, how does the ampex sound on my spendor LS? Let's make this simple. Right now I'm happy with the LS being driven by a Stromberg Carlson 220 inte using 6V6 power tubes with 10 watts per side. Before you even say it, I know 10 watts is quite miniscule on the LS, but since my room is small, it gives me more than enough to make the LS go loud at nearfield listening. I'm putting in a picture to let you see how near a field my listening is with the LS. So 10 plus 10 makes 20 sound watts of tube power. So how does the ampex amp compare with the Stromberg? Very well indeed. I can live with both just as I can with a fisher X100b integrated. The Stromberg has a firmer deeper tone, firmer than the fisher and ampex, but not lacking whatsoever in midrange clarity and good highs. However, the ampex seem to be a little more extended and "airy" in the treble that you can hear details quite so easily and readily because of the extension that the other amps don't readily possess. Remember that most vintage amps have rolled off highs which I think even Jo Ki seem to "look for" somewhat on the LS with vintage amps but found it on his new Blue Sky Diva amp he talks about in the malaysian LS club. Could the ampex amp also have what the BS has? Maybe it would be good to hear from our HK members about this amp. Walden Puddle made mention about some far east guys making raves about this amp the way he does. I'd like to confirm this ampex amp from anyone who's tried it as well. Not necessarily on the LS3/5A.

Any of you 15 ohms LS owners interested in an ampex el-34 amp, there's one pair on ebay now that looks nice. Might be worth looking. Just type ampex tube and it will direct you to all the ampex on auction. Jo Ki has just asked me about the ampex brand anyway since he wants to get a line-up of all amps that are good on the LS3/5A to include modern tube amps.

The ampex monos (first two pictures -- model 620) above were housed in suitcases built for guitar musicians. 6V6s are a fav tube for guitar amplication. These monos have been taken apart from their suitcases and can be used as an audio power amp like I've done. In front there's a speaker jack that can be used as well for the mains speaker. I haven't tried this yet. The schematic notes says that the power amp is not flat, it goes to the equalization circuit when connected to its own speakers -- a 12 ohm JBL. But it is essentially flat if connected to the external speaker jacks in front. When this jack is connected to the speakers, it also bypasses the equalization circuit altogether. Thanks Moz for putting the pictures here.

Dennis just bought an ampex mono pair purportedly using the same tubes -- the 6973.
This pair could be an early version of the same stereo ampex amp posted above. What's interesting is it's tube rectified I believe. Soundwise, I'd be curious about it. Get us a glimpse of what you hear sir! The 6V6 pictured above is rectified as well and has some baaas!
Fire away my friend!

Oh, ya! The Canons are well known for copying the "bokeh" of the Leica lenses. They even publish these "bokeh" effect on their lens test nowadays. That's why it's worth buying those prime lenses always from either Canon or Nikon. Me? Still a film guy. Still like the thrill of anaticipating what will come out from the silver halide, and do some simple dodging and burning on the prints. But really gone are the ole days when we all "see" things in the "dark." Room I should say. I guess there's always some connection between audio and photography now that you've mentioned it.
Let me "see" or "hear." Excellent "focus." Good imaging. Fine prints. NIce recording. And all that soft pastel background "noise" from analog recordings that help recreate that atmosphere. Etc. etc.

Does anybody at all know where exactly I can find the most updated newly qualified vacancies with this law practice? I have already tried Latest Law Jobs yet their job postings do not reveal the full name of the law firm. There are lots of newly certified associate jobs on the internet and yet the issue is that most of these roles are over recruitment companies that do not disclose the law firm names. Any advice would be much appreciated.
